Cairo-based Abraj Misr Urban Development has signed an agreement to construct the first green housing compound in Egypt, a project that is estimated to cost around USD 145 million, an official source at Egypt's Ministry of Housing told Zawya.

Dr. Manal El-Batran, coordinator, Egypt Green Building Council at the Housing and Building Research Center of the Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development, said the residential complex is expected to occupy a total area of 21,000 square meters. It will be directly linked to the Autostrad Highway and Ring Road in Cairo and will be in proximity to commercial establishments such as Carrefour, Shooting Club, Maadi Club and the Modern Academy.

"This project is considered the maiden green housing endeavor in Egypt. The contract agreement has been concluded [by project owner Abraj Misr] at the headquarters of the ministry. German Con Build, which specializes in pre-assembled concrete works, has been assigned as primary construction contractor," El-Batran added.

Abraj Misr, which focuses on the application of green building technologies, has successfully completed a number of renowned construction projects in various areas of Cairo over the course of seven years.

The new project is anticipated to provide residents with environment-friendly solar energy units to supply common areas and residential houses with renewable electricity to power lights, elevators and hot water networks. These sun-powered units will also play an important role in reducing the compound's electricity consumption by up to 40%.

In addition, all buildings will be equipped with advanced waste-separation system that complies with global environmental standards, further ensuring that wastes are recycled in a proper and efficient manner.
