Baghdad - The Iraqi Water Resources Ministry said Saturday that it has allocated 80 billion Iraqi dinars to line the main and branch rivers in the southern provinces to reduce water wastage.
The Director-General of the projects, Ali Hashim, told AKnews that the Ministry of Water Resources completed the main design to start implementing the project during the next week by the General Authority for projects maintenance and the two "Rafidain" and "Iraq" companies which belong to the ministry.
"There is coordination between the Ministry of Water Resources and the provinces to prevent any violation with respect to their share of the water because next season will witness high proportion of drought that should be adressed by the proper usage of water."
The Ministry of Water Resources assured that the formation of a Higher Council for water will support the government efforts to sign international agreements with countries that share water with Iraq.
The Agricultural Initiative Commission headed by the Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki decided at the end of last March to form a national water council to determine the policies that should be adopted to develop the water in the country
The United Nations mission in Iraq warned in its report issued at the end of last March Iraq from the drought of Tigris and Euphrates in 2040. The Ministry of Water Resources assured that the UN report about the drought of water by 2040 is very important but its figures are exaggerated and don't rely on accurate information
Specialists in water resources affairs stated that Iraq is one of the most wasteful countries of water because of the old irrigation mechanisms.
The Ministry of Water Resources assured at the end of February on the need to change oral agreements with Iran and Turkey to formal agreements to get the country's share of water.
The Ministry of Water Resources confirmed earlier that the main obstacle for the accomplishment of strategic projects are the financial allocations that do not fit with the plans and projects developed by the ministry.
The Ministry of Water Resources started on Dec. 12 preparing a strategic study in collaboration with global companies to determine the future of water in Iraq until 2044.
Despite the recent heavy rainfall, Iraq still suffers from drought due to lack of rainfall for more than two years, in addition to the lack of water level of rivers within the territory of Iraq, particularly from the Tigris and Euphrates.
