The Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) launched more than 70 mines and mining projects in the past seven years, said the deputy industries, mines and trade minister on Friday, IRNA reported.
Amir Amini added that during 2006-12, IMIDRO inaugurated 58 and 12 projects in mining industries and mine development sectors, respectively.
"More than 86 trillion rials have been invested to launch the projects," he said.
Amini added that during this period, 39, 7 and 8 projects pertaining to mining and steel industries, copper industry and aluminum industry, respectively, went on stream.
He noted that equipping iron ore, coal, potash and copper mines is some of the 12 mining projects that became operational in the period.
Amini said a coal making plant (Qatran) was built, an export terminal was erected and 32 power transmission and road construction projects were implemented to the infrastructures for large mines.
The establishment of Iran Mineral Processing Research Center was also among IMIDRO's achievements in recent years.
In January, the head of IMIDRO's board of directors, Fereydoun Ahmadi, said about 1 percent of the country's mineral reserve is extracted every year.
Ahmadi said studies show the country's mineral reserves stand at 57 billion tons, of which 37 billion tons are proven.
The official added that 500 million tons of minerals are exploited in the country annually.
Referring to the advantages of Iran in the field of mining investment, he said the existence of rich metal and non-metal reserves, abundant energy resources, huge manpower resources, access to free waters and increasing domestic demand are among factors that have attracted private sector investments.
Ahmadi also said drawing up a comprehensive plan in the field of mineral production with high value added will help prepare the condition for making more diversified investments in the sector and move toward sustainable development.
Iran is among 15 major mineral-rich countries and exports its industrial and mineral products to 159 countries, including Iraq, China, UAE, India and Afghanistan.
