Six new hydroelectric power plant units will begin operation across the country by the end of the current Iranian year (started March 20), an official said.

Managing director of Iran Water and Power Resources Development Company Mohammad Rezazadeh said based on the policy adopted by the Energy Ministry, the electricity generation capacity of the hydroelectric power plants will increase by 1,500 megawatts (MW) by the yearend, Fars News Agency reported.

He hoped that two units of Gotvand power plant in Khuzestan province and four units of Siah Bisheh Pumped Storage Power Plant in Mazandaran province will be inaugurated by March 2013.

The official said Siah Bisheh Pumped Storage Power Plant is the first of its kind in the country, adding additional units of the power plant are expected to begin operation in the current year.

Rezazadeh put the current electricity generation capacity of hydroelectric power plants across the country at 9,246 MW.

"Some 6,052 gigawatts (GW) of electricity has been generated by the power plants since the beginning of current year, indicating an increase of 4.5 percent compared to the figure for the corresponding period last year."
