The General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA) has confirmed a quarter of work on the first phase of the SR 42.7 billion ($ 11.4 billion) King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) project in Jeddah has been completed. Operations for phase one of the project are expected to commence by 2014.
"One-quarter of the work for the KAIA project is finished, as most contracting companies and others working on the project have set themselves a fast-paced 24-hour schedule in order to complete the first phase of the project by its deadline or hopefully earlier," GACA spokesman Khaled Al-Khaibari told Arab News.
The first phase includes service buildings, a transportation center and railway station that will form part of the Kingdom's high-speed railway network linking the two holy cities of Madinah and Makkah with Jeddah.
The general aviation terminal, safety and economic regulation building, customs control hub and environmental improvement works are just some of the work that has been completed.
In addition, 90 percent of completed upgrades to airport infrastructure include runways, courses and taxiways to accommodate jumbo aircraft, with the project expected to be handed over in mid-2013.
Also, around two-thirds of excavation work and removal of debris have been finished, with the handover of the project scheduled for the end of September this year.
Almost half of work on the terminal building and a third of the design and construction work on the ground services equipment tunnel has been completed, with both projects to be handed over before the end of 2012.
The Saudi Binladin Group, Saudi Oger and Murray & Roberts are the main contractors on the project.
The new airport project should be fully operational after phases two and three are completed by 2035, with the aim of raising the airport's annual capacity to 80 million passengers.
