A 25,000-ton silo for transited wheat was inaugurated in Amirabad Port, Mazandaran province, on Tuesday with presence of Minister of Roads and Urban Development Ali Nikzad.
The project was carried out by private sector at cost of 100 billion rials ($10 million), ISNA reported on Wednesday.
Some of the characteristics of the silo are conducting the entire operation of unloading wheat from ship and transferring it to trucks with mechanized equipments, precise online measurement during unloading from ship, preserving the quality of wheat during maintenance period and the possibility to keep wheat varieties separately.
Highlighting that Amirabad is a strategic port in north, Nikzad said Amirabad Port is connected to railroad network.
In another development, a farming economy expert said the investment should be promoted in agriculture sector and banking system must support the farmers.
Naser Shahnooshi, who is a faculty member of Mashhad's Ferdowsi University, said "If farming pattern should be observed in accordance with climatic conditions of different regions, many problems facing farmers would be removed."
He urged for increasing investment mechanism in agriculture sector and raising productivity through employing agricultural graduates.
Iran should focus on exporting horticultural products which have more advantages than farming crops, he added.
In addition, herbal plants and economic crops such as wheat, barely, and cereals which need less irrigation, should be taken more into consideration.
"We have good potentials for growing wheat, because it needs less water." he continued.
In June, the managing director of Government Trading Corporation of Iran (GTCI) said over one million tons of wheat were purchased from farmers in 10 provinces since the start of harvest season.
Abbas Qobadi said since April 20, harvest season and wheat purchase have started across provinces of Ilam, Bushehr, Khuzestan, Sistan-Baluchestan, Fars, Kerman, Kermanshah, Kohkilouyeh-Boyer Ahmad, Hormuzgan and Golestan, adding the farmers have received payments for the purchase.
The highest and lowest amount of wheat were purchased from Khuzestan province (600,000 tons) and Golestan province (5,000 tons) respectively, he pointed out.
Wheat purchase has continued across the said provinces, he added.
Thanks to the cooperation of Subsidy Reform Organization, he said, the farmers' dues have been paid promptly.
