Some 23 new power plants will become operational by the end of the current government's tenure in the next Iranian year (to start March 2013), said the managing director of Iran Power Development Company.

Majid Salehi told Mehr News Agency that about 50 trillion rials (approximately $5 billion) should be invested in constructing the power plants.

Referring to the projects which are expected to be implemented under 'Mehr Mandegar' plan by the Energy Ministry, he said Kermanshah Power Plant with the capacity to generate 648 megawatts (MW) of electricity is the first project which is to become operational in a ceremony attended by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

He added that a number of new power plant projects are expected to go on stream in various parts of the country in the near future.

The official noted that the gas powered units of Zanjan (Zanjan province), Semnan and Shahround (Semnan province) power plants as well steam powered unit of Sanandaj power plant in Kurdestan province will be commissioned in the coming months.

Salehi further stated that three 160-MW units will be inaugurated in Damavand power plant (Tehran province), pointing out that the first unit of Hafez Shiraz power plant in Fars province with the capacity of 162 MW is expected to go on stream in the near future.

He noted that the gas unit of Hafez Shiraz power plant is the first of its kind built by the private sector on Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis.

He said that plans were drawn up to build two steam powered units each with the capacity of 162 mw in Shirvan, North Khorasan province.

"Two gas powered units each with the capacity of 162 MW of electricity will be inaugurated in Genaveh, Bushehr province."

Earlier, managing director of Iran Renewable Energy Organization said agreements on the construction of 1,000-MW renewable energy power plants were signed with the private sector in the first year of the Fifth-Five Year Economic Development Plan (2010-15).

Yousef Armodeli said the Energy Ministry issued permits for the construction of 12,000 MW of renewable energy power plants by the private sector.

He said that efforts are underway to develop new energies, noting that construction of power plants is expected to be ceded to the private sector.

The Binalood power plant (Khorasan Razavi province) and Manjil power plant (Gilan province) as well as two biomass power plants in Mashhad, Khorasan Razavi province and Shiraz, Fars province are among the projects which are currently being implemented by the government.
