DOHA: The Call for Papers by the 20th World Petroleum Congress (20WPC) Programme Committee resulted in nearly 2,000 submissions from leading experts and organisations from around the world, breaking all previous Congress records.
The triennial congress, the largest of its kind in the world, with more than 4,000 delegates, 600 media and over 550 presenters, is being hosted by Qatar Petroleum and will be held at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) between December 4 and 8, this year.
Opening in 2011, QNCC will boast an iconic design and cutting edge facilities in a green technology venue. It is the first facility of its kind being built to the gold certification of the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED).
"The Qatar Organising Committee is very pleased with the record breaking number of almost 2,000 submissions from more than 455 companies and 178 institutions involved in training and research in the oil and gas field in 65 countries. Qatar Petroleum and its subsidiaries have been very pro-active with 84 submissions," Ali Al Siddiky, Vice-Chairman, Qatar Organising Committee and Congress Programme Committee National Representative, said.
What was evident from the 20WPC Call for Papers was the number of submissions from the GCC and especially Qatar. There was an overwhelming level of expertise from Qatar and the quality of submissions has delighted the panel so far.
Dr Renato Bertani, Chair of the International Congress Programme Committee for the 20th World Petroleum Congress said: "Almost 2,000 high quality papers have been submitted for 24 technical forum sessions distributed into five blocks: Natural Gas, New Exploration and Production Frontiers and Technologies, Innovations in the Downstream, Complementary Energy Sources and Industry Commitment to Sustainability. This is an unprecedented level of submissions, both in terms of quality and quantity, and our forum chairs have now the hard task of selecting only about 100 of these papers."
A wide-ranging Technical Programme for the 5-day congress will recognise the scientific, technological and professional achievements of the oil and gas sector. Topics for the sessions reflect the official theme for the 20th WPC: 'Energy Solutions for All: Promoting Cooperation, Innovation and Investment'.
The submissions received covered the broad range of topics in the 24 Forums of the 20th WPC.
