Muscat: Omran, Oman's leading tourism-related investment company, revealed that its current portfolio of tourism-related projects is worth $2 billion, which include more than twelve joint venture investments and nine properties under its management.
This would provide the necessary impetus for the development of tourism in Oman, he said.

Speaking exclusively to Times of Oman, Abdul Wahid Al Farsi, vice-president, External Affairs, Omran, said, "All Omran projects are very much linked with the tourists' needs and desires by providing quality rooms and leisure facilities that meet the growing demands of both domestic and international tourism. We are complimenting the role of the Ministry of Tourism in providing the infrastructure of the tourism industry in Oman. This will help to position Oman as a destination of the first choice in this region."

Among those which will be completed this year are two projects in Duqm -- the 3-star Duqm City Hotel and the 4-star Duqm Crowne Plaza. Omran has crossed many milestones ever since it was formed.

Says Abdul Wahid Al Farsi, "Our first delivered project was the site for the Asian Beach Games Muscat 2010. This has now been transformed to mixed use leisure facility operated by Millennium Resort (for the hotel & marina apartments) and Oman Sail for the marina."

Range of facilities
The Duqm Crowne Plaza Hotel, a 4-star Business Hotel, is equipped with 200 deluxe rooms, 11 executive suites, six family suites and one royal suite. Encompassing a range of facilities the hotel is built by Galfar and would be operated by InterContinental Hotels Group, and is expected to open in December 2012.

The Duqm City Hotel, which is nearing completion, is a prefabricated business hotel and contains 117 rooms, three suites, round-the-clock restaurant and a fitness centre. This hotel to be operated by Omran would be completed in April 2012.

According to Abdul Wahid Al Farsi, several projects are underway while some others are being developed. Among the other projects is the City Hotels Project, which is a phased development of three hotels in Shatti Al Qurum -- a 5-star W Resort, 5-star Westin Business Hotel and an Element Extended Stay Hotel. With a total room capacity of 700 along with health club, spa, food and beverage outlets, retail shops, ballroom and conference facilities.

The Westin and Element Architect RfPs will be tendered in May while the project master plan is completed and approved.
Completion for the first Phase of W Resort is expected in the third quarter of 2014 while in the second phase Westin and Element Hotels would be completed in third quarter of 2015.

Starwood Hotels and resorts would operate the hotels.
With Musandam being projected as an attractive tourist destination, a three-star resort hotel operated by Omran would come up on a waterway in Khasab in 2014.

The Khasab resort will have 100 rooms and 10 suites.
