Amman - Despite a halt in natural gas supply from Egypt, the Jordan electric system is working efficiently with a 300-megawat surplus in generation capacity, said Wednesday Director-General of the Jordan National Electricity Power Company NEPCO Ghalib Maabrah. Maabrah told Petra that electricity generation capacity in the Kingdom is estimated at 2,600 megawatts while maximum load reached 2,300 megawatts over the past few days.

Power plants are working according to set program and they are running on heavy fuel and diesel", Maabrah said. When asked about repair operations of the Egypt gas pipeline, Maabarh said " noting new regarding this issue".

On February 5th, an explosion at a gas terminal in the Egypt's northern Sinai Peninsula shut off gas supplies to the Kingdom forcing NEPCO to shift to heavy fuel and diesel to keep power plants running. Egyptian authorities expected that the halt in gas supply would last for a week before repairs are completed.

The shift from gas to heavy fuel will cost Jordan JD3 million a day as the Kingdom over the past three years depended on Egyptian gas to generate 80 percent of its electricity.
