The Moroccan government has launched a new social housing project Al-Intelaq, aiming to eradicate shantytowns in Temara, south of Rabat.
A partnership convention to carry out this project was signed between the Ministry Delegate in charge of Housing and Urbanism, the Skhirat-Temara Prefecture, the Municipality of Temara and Chaabi lil iskane, a real estate subsidiary of Ynna Holding group. The signing ceremony was held Friday at the headquarters of the Skhirat-Temara prefecture.
The project, part of a national programme dubbed "Cities without Shantytowns", closely involving the private sector, aims at building 1,200 social houses, including 700 loans for the relocation of the inhabitants of Temara shantytowns.
The cost of this project, which will be finalised in 18 months, is estimated at MAD 260 million. Chabi Lil Iskane will construct 700 social houses on a total surface of almost 60 m2, at a budget not exceeding MAD 130,000 million, including MAD 40,000 million as a contribution from the housing ministry and MAD 90,000 million from the beneficiaries, while the municipality of Temara will contribute with the property.
The project also includes the construction of 500 social houses which will contribute to the reduction of the deficit of houses in Temara, in addition to commercial and administrative buildings which will be given to the municipality of the city.
In a statement to the Rabat-based MAP news agency, Toufiq Hjira, Minister Delegate in charge of Housing and Urbanism, said that what is new in this project is the contribution of the private sector to the national programme.
"This experience constitutes a consecration of the new approach adopted by the ministry, aiming at involving the private sector in the fight against unhealthy housing.
The operation is the second of its kind carried out by Chabi Lil Iskane, "it will allow the private sector and the property promoters to contribute to the programme "cities without shantytowns" with the support and orientation of the State, he added.
For his part, the President of the Municipal Council of Temara, underlined that Al-Intelaq will complete the great projects carried out in the Skhirat-Temara prefecture for the eradication of shantytowns.
"The project completes other projects of Lkhir Seas and Nasr, which were inaugurated in June 2004 by HM King Mohammed VI, and which aim at rehousing some 37,500 families," he said.
