Iran is the 6th sugar cube and sugar producer worldwide among 76 nations, said head of Research Institute for Beet Seed Enhancement.
Dariush Fathollah-Taleqani put the area under beet cultivation at 100,000 hectares during last Iranian year (ended March 19, 2012), IRNA reported on Wednesday.
He suggested that the figure will reach 120,000 during the current Iranian year (to end March 2013).
The official explained that close to five million tons of beet were harvested last year, from which 700,000 tons of sugar can be produced.
He also said the country's annual demand to sugar stands at 2 million tons.
Fathollah-Taleqani estimated that sugarcane production will reach 1.4 million tons during the current year, which can meet a portion of the domestic demand.
He introduced provinces of West Azarbaijan, Khorasan Razavi, North Khorasan, South Khorasan, Kermanshah, Fars, and Hamedan as top regions for growing sugar beet.
Research Institute for Beet Seed Enhancement is the oldest monocrop research institute of the country which has been carrying out research in the fields of cultivation and supplying the enhanced seed since 70 years ago, the official explained.
Earlier in December, Industries, Mines and Trade Ministry's director general for non-metal industries said "Currently 43 factories, with the total production capacity of 1.8 million tons of sugar from sugarcane and sugar beet are operational nationwide".
Mohammad Sadeq Niaraki said that 4.2 million tons of sugar beets are expected to be produced by the end of the Iranian year to March 19, 2012, showing a 10-percent rise compared to the figure for the same period of last year.
"Sugarcane production would exceed 6.5 million tons in the current year (ended March 19, 2012), which indicates a 15 percent growth compared to the figure for the same period of the preceding year," he added.
The official also said that production of 1.25 million tons of sugar would meet a significant part of domestic demand, thus in a bid to support Iranian producers a suitable tariff rate would be levied on imported sugar.
