Dammam -- The Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) started the 1st phase of Gulf Interconnection under which the grids of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait have been interconnected.
A report prepared by The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said that for the first days of interconnection, the interconnected states benefited on a daily basis from the privileges of interconnection that have contributed greatly to the stability of interconnected grids.
GCCIA was established by a Royal Decree in 2001, in accordance with Unified Economic Agreement of Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, which stipulates that member states shall cooperate in the areas of land, sea transport and communications, and shall coordinate and establish the infrastructure projects such as ports, airports, and water and electricity stations.
The interconnection project is divided into three phases for pure technical reasons, as the two grids of United Arab Emirates and Oman were not ready last year for interconnection.
GCCIA is a joint stock company owned by Cooperation Council for Arab States of the Gulf with a capital of $ 1,407 million.
