Qatar Airways, Catalonia's Government End Talks On Spanair Sale

Saturday, Jan 28, 2012

(This story was originally published Friday.)

BARCELONA (Dow Jones)- Qatar Airways has walked away from talks to take over loss-making Spanish airline Spanair after months of talks, a spokeswoman for the government of Catalonia said Friday.

The government of Catalonia, Spanair's main shareholder, will look at whether there are other viable alternatives for the carrier, and also hear potential options proposed by Spanair's management, the spokeswoman added.

The Catalan government has injected millions of euros into Spanair in a bid to keep the Barcelona-based airline afloat as part of an effort to develop Barcelona's El Prat Airport as a regional hub, but decided some months ago that it couldn't keep supporting the company at a time when the government itself is in serious financial difficulties.

Spanair's former owner, Scandinavian airline SAS AB (SAS.SK), still owns 11.9% of Spanair.
