LONDON (Dow Jones)--Russia and Syria may open a direct maritime connection between the Syrian port of Latakkia and Russian port of Novorossiisk on the Black Sea to ship cargo directly, Russia's transportation minister is reported as saying during talks between Russia and Syria Tuesday, the RIA Novosti agency reports.

Discussing maritime communication issues with the Syrian side, Igor Levitin said Russia and Syria should open a sea link to "transport cargos directly, avoiding transit through other countries."
