Continuous collaboration key to fulfilling emirate's geospatial vision

June 12, 2013: The Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Center (ADSIC) held its latest periodic meeting with members of the Abu Dhabi Spatial Data Infrastructure (AD-SDI) initiative recently at the Jumeirah at Etihad Towers Meeting Room in Abu Dhabi to discuss geospatial experiences, trends and best practices impacting the emirate's development.

The AD-SDI is a strategic initiative under the Abu Dhabi e-Government program that empowers government and society through open access to high quality and up-to-date geographic information and spatially enabled government services. Since its establishment in 2007 AD-SDI has been gathering its members to periodic meetings to discuss the initiative's current status, issues and concerns, best practices, and areas for further improvement.

Attendees to the recent AD-SDI meeting talked about their latest GIS projects, solutions and applications and also discussed issues of common concern with the goal of better aligning member goals, activities and strategies. They also updated each other on key technologies and the latest strategic trends.

"Unity is like a chain; one weak link can compromise the stronger ones. It is important that all AD-SDI members constantly communicate and cooperate, feed off of their strengths and collaboratively strategize on what to do next to sustain all the achievements that have been made to build up Abu Dhabi's geospatial field. These regular meetings are important to the fulfillment of the shared goals of all members," said Khaled Al Sheikh, Entity Liaison Manager, Spatial Data Centre.

The Abu Dhabi Spatial Data Infrastructure leverages geospatial capabilities to enhance vital government and business functions such as Impact Analysis, Decision-Making, Transportation Safety and Security, Population Trending, Community Planning, and Resource Management. The initiative is currently strengthening program components and undergoing institutionalization under Stage 2 of its three-stage development.

Among AD-SDI's major plans for 2013 are the introduction of sector SDI strategies and geo-maturity assessments as a continuation of the stakeholders' Geo-Maturity Assessment Framework which began in 2011, and the development of a shared government service called 'Spatially Enabled Executive Dashboard' that enhances performance reporting.

The Abu Dhabi Spatial Data Infrastructure is overseen by the Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Centre, the government entity assigned to modernize local government through information technology and manage the emirate's long-term information and communications technology agenda.
