Municipality of Abu Dhabi City hosting major platform for UN's global road safety advocacy

The UAE's capital city of Abu Dhabi has today (Tuesday, May 21, 2013) become a beacon of road safety for the region with the opening of the 2013 Abu Dhabi Road Safety Forum (ADRSF) at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal. Road safety experts, practitioners, policy makers, government representatives and even aspiring student engineers will take part in dynamic talks on Abu Dhabi's vision of achieving zero road fatalities by 2030 and the emirate's transformation into a global model of traffic efficiency and safety
Running as part of the 2013 UN Global Road Safety Week, ADSRF is hosted by the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City and is organized by Turret media in coordination with the US-based International Road Federation. Among the prominent figures speaking before the Forum participants are Eng. Eisa Al Mazrouie, Executive Director of Infrastructure Sector, Abu Dhabi Municipality; Gabriel Sanchez, Executive Vice President, International Road Federation; Ibrahim al Hamoudi, senior transport planner at the Urban Planning Council; Bader Al Qamzi, Department of Transport integrated planning manager; Dr. Hala Sakr Ali, Director of WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, United Nations; Tony Bliss, Advisor, The World Bank Global Road Safety Facility; Joseph Toole, Former Associate Administrator, Office of Safety, US Fed. Highway Administration; and Dr. Walid Al Kharusi, President, Oman Road Safety Association.
The Forum covers various vital areas of road safety, including Road Safety Strategies & Action Plans; Emergency / Incident Management; Vulnerable Road Users; Data Collection & Road Safety Audits; and Public Education Campaigns & Community Activities. It also features several technology and policy initiatives being undertaken by the Abu Dhabi Government to enhance road safety in line with the emirate's Vision 2030 development blueprint.
"ADSRF emphasizes Abu Dhabi's commitment to support the global plan under the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety. This forum is also a starting point and an anchor to the World Road Safety Summit in 2014. The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City is keen to promote partnership, cooperation and integration with all the relevant authorities of influence in advancing development. This includes all the bodies, institutions and ministries involved with the safety of road users locally, regionally and globally," said H.E. ADSRF is a result of joint efforts between the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City and concerned government agencies such as the Department of Transport, the Abu Dhabi Police, and the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council. The convening of this event is a prelude to greater efficiency precedes a much bigger Abu Dhabi International Road Safety Summit slated for March 2014 which will also be hosted by the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City. Both today's Forum and next year's Summit are major advocacy platforms for the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020.
