MoU aims to empower digitally excluded groups in Qatar by building basic ICT skill sets
Doha, Qatar, 18th April, 2013
Intel Corporation, a world leader in computing innovation, today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ictQATAR, the Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology in Qatar, to collaborate on a national digital inclusion program in the State of Qatar. This initiative will advance integrated digital technology and encourage various digitally excluded target groups to learn and possess technological skills needed in society today.
Intel will provide a complementary Intel Easy Steps Program that provides adult learners with hands-on digital experience. Instructions are provided in a non-technical manner, accommodating learners with minimal computer experience and providing an opportunity for adult learners to enhance social and economic self-sufficiency through digital literacy.
ictQATAR will provide the courses in English and Arabic through flexible programs in community settings, as well as "train the trainer" workshops in which 60 selected individuals will become instructors, and will be taught class management, so they are able to cascade the training to their peers. A crucial part of our collaboration will be to develop customised content for Qatar and our target groups in Arabic.
"Technology has become a necessity in multiple aspects of our daily lives, and it is imperative to ensure we provide the basic tools to support and encourage adult learners; this is something we will achieve through our collaboration with Intel, allowing us to strengthen our digital education initiative across the nation," said Damian Radcliffe, ICT and Society Acting Executive Dircetor at ictQATAR.
Speaking at the signing, Nassir Nauthoa, General Manager for the GCC at Intel Corporation said: "Intel is strongly dedicated to working with governments across our global markets to provide digital literacy and enhance technological skills to all adult learners, and this is especially true for our markets across the Middle East region.
This memorandum is in line with Intel's Asia Pacific Social Responsibility, which encompasses the Digital Literacy and Community Empowerment. The MoU is also in accordance with Qatar's Emiree decree Law No.24 of 2006, in which ictQatar aims to bridge the digital divide in Qatar by enhancing ICT readiness and usage of all members of society, especially disadvantaged segments such as women.
