Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen educates DP World staff about traffic awareness

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, March 05, 2013:- As part of its ongoing Employee Engagement programme, DP World, UAE Region is holding a month long campaign to raise awareness amongst its 6,000 employees about road safety and preventing dangerous driving.

The programme highlights the danger of using mobile phones while driving, the importance of wearing seat belts, the need to abide by speed limits and the importance of tyre maintenance.

DP World's 'Safe Driving Campaign 2013' targets all employees at Jebel Ali Port and its other facilities across the country. Posters, banners and booklets have been distributed across the business with weekly tips on safe driving being circulated by email to all staff.

As part of the campaign, His Excellency Major-General Engineer Mohammad Saif Al Zafeen, Director of the General Directorate of Traffic in Dubai Police, gave a seminar on road safety that highlighted the most common bad habits of drivers, and educated attendees about traffic systems. Masoud Abdullah from Nasser Bin Abdullatif Alserkal Est., the distributor of Bridgestone tyres in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, also presented on how to maintain tyres for safe driving.

His Excellency Major-General Engineer Mohammad Saif Al Zafeen, Director of the General Directorate of Traffic Dubai Police, said:

"My congratulations go to DP World on this campaign, which is in keeping with our mission to educate Dubai citizens to abide by traffic regulations so they maintain their own safety and that of others. Our combined efforts will help employees of government departments and private companies to be much more aware of the importance of following the rules of the road. The campaign boosts the efforts we are making to ensure UAE roads are safer for all drivers.

"Dubai Police issued 44 thousand traffic offence tickets during 2012 and we have succeeded in reducing traffic-related deaths last year to 3 per 100,000 of the population from 4 per 100,000 in 2011. We are moving in the right direction to achieve the Dubai 2020 vision of zero deaths on our roads."

Major-General Al Zafeen highlighted the danger of phone calling or writing text messages and other distracting behaviours while driving, and also underlined that the greater the speed, the shorter the time a driver has to react to danger.

Mohammed Al Muallem, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, DP World, UAE Region, said:

"DP World plays a significant role in the communities in which we operate and we strongly believe that it is our responsibility to contribute to their safety. This campaign is a great opportunity to raise awareness about safe driving and we thank Dubai Police represented by HE Major-General Engineer Mohammad Saif Al Zafeen, Director of the General Directorate of Traffic, and Bridgestone for their cooperation to make it successful and useful."

Activities during the month include weekly quiz competitions, a drawing competition open to children of all DP World employees and four weekly awards for drivers in Jebel Ali Port operational areas observing traffic rules and driving safely.
