Financial centre has a Spring in its step

The DIFC has welcomed a number of firms who have moved their operations as a result of last year's unrest across the Middle East, but its appeal transcends regional instability, the hub's management said yesterday.

Asked whether the DIFC had become a sanctuary for financial firms shifting staff from countries affected by unrest, such as Bahrain, DIFC Authority CEO Mohammed Al Awar said: "If you are talking from the business perspective, of course we have seen an influx of firms coming into the centre because of various uncertainties that the Arab spring brought up."

However, he said the "platform and the offering" of the DIFC had not changed. "The value proposition was the same in the DIFC and continues to be the same," he explained.

"Yes, the centre saw clients coming in as a result of this event but it has not been the only time. Look at the history of this region over the past 20 or 25 years - there was always something happening and there was always uncertainty around the region."
