Italian foodstuff exports to UAE record steady growth

By A Correspondent DUBAI - The export of Italian foodstuff and beverages to the UAE registered a steady growth of 28.4 per cent to €90 million in the first 10 months of 2011 compared to the same period of the previous year, Italian Ambassador to the UAE Giorgio Starace said.

He said the Italian firms have been doing business with the UAE counterparts as the exports of food products rose from €67 million in 2007 to €85.4 million in 2010, reflecting an increase of 21 per cent.

"The Italian presence at Gulfood has dramatically grown over the past few years. In 2012, the Italian presence has reached almost 200 companies that exhibit on a surface of 3,125 square metres. They represent the best of Made in Italy in the food and beverages, food equipments and food processing sectors," Starace said during an interview after visiting the Gulfood 2012 exhibition in Dubai.

Starace said that the food and beverages sector has undergone an exponential growth in relation to the purchase of quality products, of which Italy is among the best producers and distributors in the world.

He said that despite the world crisis of 2008-09, Italy has maintained an excellent level of participation in all the editions of Gulfood, both in terms of occupied surface -- more the 3,000 net square metres and number of exhibitors, including consortia, chambers of commerce and regional governments. The most significant increase has been registered in food processing and food technology sectors.

Starace said that since the UAE depends heavily on imports to fill the gap between limited domestic food production and demand from a growing population base, Italy is one of the most important players and, consequently, trade partner in the food and beverage sector.

Despite attempts to increase local production of food products over the last few years, he said the UAE still imports 85 to 90 per cent cent of its total food requirements.

Since a high percentage of imported products (approximately 50 per cent) are then re-exported to the GCC countries, former USSR Republics, the Indian subcontinent and Eastern Africa, the UAE represents a perfect hub for the re-export of Italian products in these areas, the ambassador said.
