Slovenian delegation visits PAIPED

MUSCAT -- Nisreen Jaffar, Director-General, Investment Department of the Public Authority for Investment Promotion and Export Development, (PAIPED) played host to a Slovenian delegation on Sunday which aims to strengthen business ties and promote trade between Oman and Slovenia. Led by Boris Sovic and Gojka Jekos of the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affiairs the high-profile delegation met various organisations with the aim of strengthening commercial ties between the two countries.

Many Slovenian companies are enjoying international success. For example, Elan skis -- the ones used by skiing champions -- Seaway sailing boats, Pipistrel ultra light aircraft and the brilliantly designed Gorenje household appliances. Slovenia's ICT firms as well as pharmaceutical and automobile businesses are also gaining ground in EU markets.

Europe is a clear business priority for Slovenian firms, accounting for 70 per cent of all exports and 78 per cent of all imports. Exports of goods are strong in these markets, mainly thanks to continuing sales to Germany, Austria, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, Slovakia, Greece, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.

Among non-EU markets, exports to the CIS region are at the top, with Russia and Ukraine leading the list. Slovenian firms are also recording strong export figures to markets further afield that include China, India, Egypt and Brazil. Traditional exports to Balkan markets are also substantial. The 2012 Index of Economic Freedom produced by the Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal ranks Slovenia's economy as the 69th freest and 32nd out of 43 European countries.

Its regulatory framework has been gradually evolving to promote the emergence of a more vibrant private sector and encourage broad-based employment growth. It also enjoys a comparatively high degree of trade freedom as tariff rates are relatively low. "It is clear that Slovenia has taken a cautious and deliberate approach to economic management. It has a well-educated and productive workforce and despite recent declines in GDP growth it's one the best economic performers in central and eastern Europe.
