MPs to vote on Deputy PM Mutlag sacking next week
By Husam Ali BAGHDAD - The House of Representatives is set to vote next week on the sacking order placed on Deputy Prime Minister Saleh Mutlag.A source close the House Speaker Osama Nujaifi said that Nujaifi inserted the voting in next week's agenda of sessions "under obligation and in response to great pressure from the political parties and some representatives and heads of blocs".
Nujaifi intended to suspend the issue so that it could be discussed at the long-delayed national conference of the political parties, according to the source.
Acting Head of the White Iraqiya bloc Qutayba al-Jobouri said the MPs will vote on the order so that legal steps are taken and the dispute between Iraqiya List and the National Alliance over the order can be resolved as soon as possible.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki of the National Alliance issued the order against Mutlag of Iraqiya alliance after the latter described the PM as "a destructive dictator".
The National Alliance, which nominated Maliki for his current post, offered three options to ease the tensions over the issue: both Mutlag and Iraqiya should apologize and their apology should be accepted by the Maliki, Mutlag should himself resign, or Iraqiya should name another deputy for Mutlag's position. Mutlag and Iraqiya have yet to commit to any of these suggestions.
At the same time Ali Shalah of the State of Law Coalition, led by Maliki, said there is no chance for Mutlag to retain his post "because Maliki doesn't accept his apology despite the mediation". Shalah advised Iraqiya to propose another deputy to assume Mutlag's post. "This is our only option to resolve Mutlag's issue and we don't accept any more solutions," he said.
Iraqiya spokesman Haidar Mula said: "Maliki's demand to withdraw confidence from Mutlag is unconstitutional and Mutlag won't make any apologies because he hasn't committed any constitutional violation in his mission as deputy PM."
