Sadrist accuses blocs of impeding general amnesty bill

By Haidar Ibrahim BAGHDAD - Some blocs in the House of Representatives are trying to impede the general amnesty bill in exchange for political achievements, a representative from the Sadr Current said.

Amir Kanani did not name any party or the sort of the political achievement.

He said that six months past the first reading of bill and despite the fact that the committees have studied the bill and forwarded it for the second reading, "some parties are still creating obstacles to suspend the bill for political reasons."

The bill was one of the articles of an agreement which was brokered in Erbil and reinstated Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

The first article of the bill stipulates a general and inclusive amnesty for Iraqis (civilian and military) inside the country and abroad who are sentenced to jail, life imprisonment, or hanging, whether or not their verdicts are issued in their presence or in absentia, whether they are finalized or not.
