Health conference opens in Jeddah
By By FOUZIA KHAN JEDDAH: The two-day Preventive Medicine and Public Health Care Conference started on Feb. 14 at the Intercontinental Hotel Jeddah with a view to improve the quality of public health through prevention and treatment of diseases and other physical and mental conditions.The conference is organized by the National Guard Health Affairs and King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences in collaboration with the Community and Preventive Medicine western region.
It was inaugurated by Dr. Mansour bin Ahmed Al-Jundi, the executive director of the National Guard Health Affairs in the western region.
He further said that 32 research papers with an interdisciplinary approach on public health programs and services would be discussed, including epidemiology, community and school health, maternal and child health, environmental and occupational health, oral health, biostatistics, public policy and health services.
"I believe that if we want to bring about a meaningful change to health care delivery in our country, we need to change the way we see health by focusing on preventing illness and disease before it starts."
Dr. Kamal further said that preventive medicine and public health needed to serve as the backbone of the country's health care system. In this conference, they aspire to take the lead to a more aligned and focused collaboration between different governmental and nongovernmental partners in the development and implementation of public health and prevention initiatives and programs.
"We will enlighten more health care planners as well as policy and decision makers on the importance of preventive medicine and public health as a priority in this country," he added.
As part of the health conference, an international workshop on professional aspects of epidemiology and health research will be held on Feb. 16.
