JCC chief urges higher commercial, investment relations with US

AMMAN -- Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC) President Nael Kabariti stressed the Kingdom's openness for business and urged the US to expand its commercial cooperation with Jordan.

During a meeting with US ambassador in Amman Stuart E. Jones on Sunday, Kabariti described the Jordanian-US relations as distinguished and continuously growing, stressing the need to develop these ties in the areas of commerce and investment, in particular.

Jordan is committed to boost its commercial and economic relations with world countries and to attract value-added foreign investments, to bolster the development process and provide employment opportunities, Kabariti told the ambassador during the meeting attended by several JCC members and commercial representatives.

In light of His Majesty King Abdullah's efforts, the national economy has been able to integrate through the international economy, despite the country's limited resources, Kabariti noted.

Throughout the past few years, the country has signed several bilateral and regional commercial accords, foremost of which was the free trade agreement signed with the US which has boosted the commercial trade volume between the two countries and increased the Kingdom's exports to the US, he explained.

Kabariti highlighted the government's efforts with the King's support to achieve political, economic and social reform, noting that Jordan also seeks to achieve economic growth and to boost investments in infrastructure and education and to combat poverty and unemployment.

The JCC president called for continued efforts to build on the strong relations between the two countries to boost economic and commercial relations, underling the significant contributions of the services sector, including health, IT and education services, to the economy.

He also called on the US to back up the commercial sector through technical and administrative assistance and to support the energy sector in particular.

During the meeting, Jones voiced hope that the joint commercial volume will grow in favour of the two countries, stressing the Kingdom's role in preserving peace and stability in the Middle East region.

The ambassador noted that Jordan is a partner and an important ally for the US, stressing his country's continued support for the Kingdom.

Jones also highlighted the success and achievements of the Jordanian private sector, calling on its representatives to provide him with any proposals to expand the economic cooperation between the two countries, especially in the fields of health services, IT and pharmaceuticals.

During the first 11 months of last year, the Kingdom's exports to the US amounted to around $932 million while its imports from the US were $990 million.

National exports to the US include olive oil, pharmaceuticals, garments, jewellery, carpets and some food stuff.
