Universities should host more job fairs -- graduates

By Mohammad Ghazal AMMAN -- Holding regular job fairs at the Kingdom's universities would be an effective way to help students find jobs and network with professionals in their fields, recent graduates said.

They pointed out that having the opportunity to attend more job fairs would help them better understand the skills and capabilities needed in the labour market and improve their competitiveness accordingly.

"Universities should cooperate with private companies to hold job fairs on campus," Nusaibah Jaludi, an industrial engineer who graduated a few months ago from the University of Jordan , told The Jordan Times late Sunday during the Ninth Annual Career and Internship Fair, organised by the New York Institute of Technology.

Rafat Rawashdeh, a graduate from the engineering faculty at the University of Jordan , agreed.

"Holding job fairs makes it easier for graduates to find jobs. Whenever I hear about a job fair, I go to submit my CV and communicate with companies' representatives," he told The Jordan Times during the fair, where about 30 companies from different sectors participated.

"When I was still a student at the university, I never saw a job fair on campus," he lamented.

Ahmad Ali, a graduate from the Amman Private University who holds a BA in English, concurred.

"Going to job fairs does not mean finding a job on the spot, but it is a good opportunity to see what companies want and what skills they are asking for. Going to such fairs helps graduates and makes them better acquainted with the actual condition of the labour market," he noted Sunday.

The Ninth Annual Career and Internship Fair, which attracted scores of university graduates, provides graduates with the opportunity to apply for vacancies at participating companies and also provides volunteering and internship opportunities for them at these companies, Lina Mattar, associate director of alumni and employer relations at the New York Institute of Technology, told The Jordan Times Sunday.
