Firm stand needed on Syria crisis: Saudi Arabia
RIYADH -- The Kingdom has called for an emphatic and firm international stand on ending the violence in Syria which has claimed thousands of innocent lives in recent weeks."Tentative and half measures have failed to halt the massacre of innocent Syrians and firm, resolute action is needed to control the situation," the Cabinet said in a meeting here Monday presided over by King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.
Dr. Yusuf Bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen, Minister of Social Affairs and Acting Minister of Culture and Information, said the Cabinet commended the recent statement of the King underlying the shaken confidence of the world community in the United Nations.
Addressing the guests of the ongoing 27th Janadriya Festival this week, the Monarch lashed out at the United Nations for its failure to end the Syrian crisis. "No matter how powerful, countries cannot rule the whole world," the King said in his address. "The world is ruled by brains, by justice, by morals and by fairness."
Dr. Al-Othaimeen said the Cabinet praised the Arab League measures to resolve the Syrian crisis. It also welcomed the Tunisian initiative of hosting a Friends of Syria Conference later this month.
Dr. Al-Othaimeen said King Abdullah briefed the Council on the talks and consultations he had in the past week with leaders of friendly countries and their envoys focusing on bilateral relations and the means of enhancing them.
The Cabinet also welcomed the Doha declaration signed by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leader Khaled Misha'l, which led to Palestinian national reconciliation, hoping that this will consolidate Palestinian unity to achieve the just aspirations of the Palestinian people.
On local issues, the Cabinet approved a recommendation from the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the King Abdul Aziz Foundation to expand the board's membership to include the Minister of Culture and Information and a representative from the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities.
