Two new ministries for seventh Kurdistan cabinet
By Rebin Hassan and Fryad Mohammed ERBIL - Two new ministries will be added to the current number when the seventh cabinet of the Kurdistan regional government is formed if opposition parties agree to take part.Politburo spokesperson for the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Jaafar Ibrahim said that if the opposition parties participate in the new cabinet then KDP will take seven ministries equal to its ally the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). Two ministries then will then be added.
Efforts are underway to incorporate the opposition - the Gorran Movement, the Kurdistan Islamic Union and the Kurdistan Islamic Group - into the new cabinet, though they have refused the proposals so far. The current government has 21 ministers and four officials assigned as ministers but without a ministry.
As per a deal, PUK led by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and KDP of Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani share power. Under this 2007 deal the parties are now exchanging the government to replace PUK Prime Minister Barham Saleh, who has been in power since 2009, with former Kurdistan PM Nechirvan Barzani - Massoud Barzani's nephew and his vice in the KDP.
Ibrahim added that his party is yet to nominate candidates for its share of ministries because the party is waiting for President Barzani to assign Nechirvan Barzani and Imad Ahmed, for deputy PM post, who will then both form the new cabinet.
AKnews contacted Fuad Hussein, head of the Kurdistan presidential office, to find out when the new cabinet will be formed. The presidency of the Kurdistan region has sent the official resignation letter of the current cabinet to the parliament, he said.
"Now we're waiting for the parliament to name the PM and deputy PM so that the Kurdistan president can assign them to from the seventh cabinet."
KDP politburo spokesperson said his party has not discussed whether they should keep the current KDP ministers but added that "the future PM demands more new faces in the cabinet".
PUK politburo member Saadi Ahmed Pira said his party is yet to name ministers for the new cabinet. This will be decided soon, Pira told AKnews in a meeting.
