Saudi Arabia to produce over 3m tons of steel next year

By By GALAL FAKKAR JEDDAH: Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) Secretary-General Adnan bin Hussain Mandourah Sunday said the steel factories in the Kingdom were currently being expanded to produce more than three tons of steel annually from next year.

He made the remarks after opening the International Steel & Concrete Exhibition 2012.

Saudi Arabia gives special attention to the production of steel, he pointed out.

Mandourah described the four-day exhibition at the Jeddah Convention Center as the largest of its kind in the region displaying steel products and showing experiments of other countries in the production of steel.

Exhibition Director Anis bin Hassan Dahlan expected the show to attract businessmen and investors from Saudi Arabia, the GCC and other countries.

It consists of 122 pavilions built on an area of about 8,000 square meters.

He said steel factories from Egypt, Turkey and India were taking part in the event.

Dahlan said the annual demand for steel in the Saudi market exceeded 6.5 million tons in view of the country's rapid economic development.

Construction and mega basic infrastructure projects in the Kingdom have lured the international steel manufacturers, he said.

He said the exhibitors will display the latest technologies being used in the production of steel.

He said the exhibition would provide an opportunity for manufacturers and decision-makers to discuss bilateral cooperation and exchange of expertise.
