Oman to get Iranian gas
MUSCAT -- Iran's First Vice-President Mohammed Reza Rahimi said that his talks with Sultan Qaboos dealt with supplying the Sultanate with Iranian gas, both for industrial and household uses.Iran and Oman signed a deal in 2009 to jointly develop an underwater 200-kilometer gas pipeline to Musandam and Sohar in Oman.
Speaking at a press conference, Rahimi said the talks were fruitful and focused on co-operation to achieve the common interests of both countries, Omanobserver reported.
Rahimi added that the talks also dealt with the passage of goods via Omani and Iranian seaports towards East Asian and Central Asian states. He reaffirmed that the first step for co-operation in this field was established and that emphasis was laid on the activation of important agreements that the two countries had signed long ago.
Caretaker director of the National Iranian Gas Export Company (NIGEC) said in September 2011 that Iran has reached agreements with India and Oman on exporting gas to the two countries.
Hossein Bidarmaghz added that negotiations between Iran and India started 11 months ago and are ongoing.
One possible way to transfer Iranian gas to India is via Oman through subsea pipelines.
Bidarmaghz said based on a trilateral agreement among Iran, Oman and a third country, Iran's gas will feed Oman's liquefaction plant before being processed into various products in the third country.
