Barzani: we welcome broad-based government
By Fryad Mohammed ERBIL - Kurdistan Democratic party (KDP)'s Nechirvan Barzani, who is expected to head a new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet soon said Tuesday that he would welcome a broad-based cabinet that includes all political parties in the region.Barzani's comment came on the sidelines of a meeting with the leader of the Kurdistan Socialist Party on Tuesday - part of a series of meetings the KDP man has started recently in an attempt to bring together as many of the opposition parties as possible into his new cabinet.
Barzani is preparing to head the KRG soon as part of a political deal between the KDP and its ally the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) which states on power-sharing.
"But we have not discussed this [with the political parties] formally.. once I am officially assigned with forming the next government, once again we will hold talks with all the political parties in Kurdistan"
He is also expected to hold talks with the region's second largest opposition group, the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) who avoided talks with the KDP leaders last month due to disputes over arsons at KIU offices in Duhok province. The KIU accused the KDP of being behind the torching of their offices there.
According to a political deal signed between the KDP and PU), the two parties enter elections as partners and share government positions 50-50 including two years of premiership for each party's candidate.
Mr. Salih, the current Prime Minister from the PUK, took office in 2010. After two years in office, the KDP is now claiming its part of the four year term.
Also, as part of the deal, the position of the parliament speaker, currently held by the KDP, will go to the PUK.
But the PUk have not yet officially put forward candidates to fill the slot. "We are waiting for Jala Talabani, PUK leader, to come back from Baghdad to Kurdistan so that we can announce the candidate for the position officially"
