Nawras profit drops 5%

Nawras has announced a five per cent decline in net profit to RO47.5mn for the year 2011 against RO50mn in the previous year, according to the telecom company's announcement on the Muscat Securities Market (MSM) on Monday.

Net profit in the fourth quarter remained unchanged at RO11.9mn from the same quarter of 2010. Nawras reported a full-year revenue of RO196.9mn against

RO188.9mn in 2010, registering a growth of 4.2 per cent.

The company, in a statement on MSM, said, "Net profit was affected by higher depreciation and amortisation charges relating to the build out of fixed and mobile networks."

Nawras' mobile and fixed customers base declined by 3.6 per cent to 1.96mn at the end of 2011 compared to 2.03mn a year ago. The company said the decline in customer numbers was due primarily to changes in the rules for counting the customer base. Accordingly, the total number of terminated SIMs stood at 225,722.
