King, Abbas hold talks, agree to pursue consultation on peace process
Amman - His Majesty King Abdullah II on Tuesday held talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on efforts to kickstart peace negotiations with Israel and agreed to pursue consultation on various topics.
The King called for creating an atmosphere conducive to launching negotiations that address all final status issues leading to an independent and viable Palestinian state on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He said a meeting between Palestinian and Israeli negotiators held in Amman last week was a step to be built on and followed by more encounters to overcome hurdles to resumption of direct negotiations based on the two-state solution.
King Abdullah will meet President Barack Obama during an upcoming visit to the United States which will partly focus on giving momentum to peace efforts whose achievement needs the international community's support.
Abbas told the King he valued his initiative to host Palestinian-Israeli meetings and his tremendous efforts to advance peacemaking as well Jordan's continued aid to Palestinians.
"We appreciate His Majesty's initiative to host the meetings between Palestinians and Israelis, which are in the framework of his keenness to back the Palestinian Authority and the rights of the Palestinian people," Abbas added during the meeting attended by foreign minister Nasser Judeh, the King's aides and chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat.
The Palestinian leader told reporters after the meeting that he discussed with the King issues to be tackled during his trip to Washington soon and talks with Obama, particularly the peace process.
"We talked about the course of the Palestinian-Israeli dialogue that Jordan had hosted to bring views closer and arrive at a solution," he added, voiced his hope that more meetings will be held on January 26 to go back to the legal basis to resume negotiations.
"We will pursue consultation with His Majesty according to the facts and to agree on solutions," Abbas said, stressing that he welcomed any opportunity Jordan provides to push the peace talks forward, "which we should utilize regardless how dim prospects are."
