UAE: Metro night services on New Year's eve

By Shafaat Ahmed To facilitate better movement of people for the New Year celebrations, the Roads and Transport Authority has announced non-stop operation of trains on the New Year's eve
DUBAI - To facilitate better movement of people for the New Year celebrations, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced non-stop operation of trains on the New Year's eve, apart from deploying extra buses and taxis in and around Burj Khalifa , the main centre of celebrations.

Both the Red Line and Green Line trains will run every three minutes from 12am to 5.30am on January 1, while frequency during normal hours would continue to be between four to 10 minutes.

The move follows complaints of breakdown and chaos during 2011 New Year celebrations, when people thronged Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa to see the special fireworks, clogging the roads leading to the area. This year, however, the RTA along with Dubai Police and Emaar, has made special arrangements to ease traffic as well as people's movement, including the allotment of special parking lots, 63 dedicated shuttle buses as well as around 4,000 taxis.

"We took this decision to streamline the traffic and ease the flow of people to and from the main centre of celebrations, which is Burj Khalifa . Both the Metro lines would be open through day and night, allowing people to move freely," said Ramadan Abdullah, Director of Metro Operations at the RTA.

Efforts have also been made to spruce up three stations close to Burj Khalifa -- Dubai Mall station, the Financial Centre station as well as the Business Bay station -- and the officials present at these stations would make sure that passengers do not throng a particular station. Arrangements have also been made to streamline vehicular traffic at Emaar Boulevard.

The arrangements also include closure of roads leading to Burj Khalifa once parking space in and around Dubai Mall is filled, probably around 8pm on December 31. Special signs have also been placed to direct traffic depending on the situation.

Around 400,000 people are expected to visit Burj Khalifa for the celebrations between 7.30pm on December 31 to 12am and 10,000 additional parking slots have been created at DWTC, Zabeel Park and Meydan, from where express buses will transport the passengers to Dubai Mall.
