Licensing Agency launches e-inspection campaign to detect heavy vehicles faults
Roads and Transport Authority: The Monitoring and Enforcement Department, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has recently piloted an electronic inspection campaign to detect & repair various faults of heavy vehicles with the aim of spreading the awareness of safety standards, promoting the security of the community and verifying land transport companies' commitment to the applicable laws and regulations. The campaign was run in collaboration with the Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority ( JAFZA ), Bridgestone Tire Company and IBM.

Commenting on the campaign, Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA's Licensing Agency, said: "This campaign, which aims to enhance the road safety and reduce traffic accidents, is aligned with the Agency's vision aimed at achieving "Excellence in Monitoring and Enforcement."

"The selection of JAFZA as a ground for launching this pilot inspection campaign on heavy vehicles faults is driven by the fact that the area represents a key crossing point of trucks traveling from and to the Emirate of Dubai, besides that JAFZA management is showing a great deal of cooperation and attention to the security and safety standards. This cooperation has paved the way for us to carry this campaign on the largest possible number of heavy vehicles of all types involving the inspection of the vehicle's age, type, tires, authorized payload, and readiness for transporting various cargoes & hazardous materials along with the compliance with the associated technical specifications," added Bahrozyan.

About the technical devices used in the inspection campaign, the CEO of RTA Licensing Agency said, "High-tech electronic inspection devices have been used during the inspection process through which reports describing the general condition of the vehicle and associated faults were issued and directly e-mailed to the fleet's management to inform them of these failures and educate them on the necessary repair measures needed. The inspection has particularly focused on the vehicle's identity, brake system, body, safety equipment, engine, modifications, lights, and tires."

Bahrozyan also praised the cooperation & role of Bridgestone Co. in the campaign through inspecting the tires of approximately 100 vehicles of which 37 showed signs of damage such as total tear & wear of the whole tire, cut in the tire's tread, erosion of the tires' shoulders, and separation of the tires' inner and outer layers. On the other hand, drivers whose vehicles were found free from defects were offered a variety of gifts in order to motivate other drivers to follow suit, pay attention to their vehicles, and comply with the specified load in the interest of road safety.

Bahrozyan confirmed that the results of the campaign were enormous as it significantly contributed to detecting several negative aspects that have been identified and would be addressed accordingly by the Agency. "We have also managed to promote the positive aspects in raising the efficiency of inspectors and boosting their capabilities to improve their performance in order to realize the strategic objectives of the RTA," concluded Bahrozyan.
