Blair warns clock is ticking for regional economic reform

Tony Blair has said the new governments created by Middle East upheaval this year must bring real improvements to people's lives or face further civil backlash soon.
Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has said the new governments created by Middle East upheaval this year must bring real improvements to people's lives or face further civil backlash soon.

"Unless ordinary people see tangible progress over the next three years, there will be a huge backlash," Blair said, speaking in his capacity as UN Middle East quartet representative at the World Economic Forum in Jordan yesterday.

Amre Moussa, former secretary-general of the League of Arab States shared his urgency, saying that the young had fought for the changes with their blood therefore "we must find ways to meet their aspirations".

Meanwhile, Jordan's Queen Rania called on Arab youth to learn entrepreneurial skills rather than merely count on government jobs, adding that youth unemployment costs the region $50 billion per year.
