EGM approves Oman Mobile-Omantel merger

Oman Telecommunications Company 's extraordinary general meeting (EGM) held on October 12 approved the planned merger of Oman Mobile with Omantel . The meeting was chaired by Abdul Kader Askalan vice chairman of Omantel 's board of directors.

On October 10, the meeting of shareholders of Oman Mobile approved the merger proposal, which will reinforce the company's position in the sultanate as the biggest integrated telecom services provider, a press release said.

Dr Amer bin Awadh al Rawas, chief executive officer of Omantel , said, "The approval of the general meeting of the company for the planned merger proposal between Oman Mobile and Omantel is a legal requirement according to the Commercial Companies Law and forms the last step in the merger initiative that was launched three years back when the operations of both companies were integrated into one unified operating model."

He added, "Enhancing internal efficiency was one of the main objectives of the integration of operational activities and we are glad that we have successfully implemented this through the synergy that was created between both company's operations in functions like finance, human resources, procurements and network. This has helped us create added value for our shareholders despite stiff competition in the local market, which is ranked as the fourth most competitive telecom market in the region."

Dr Rawas added, "Our customers were able to see the fruits of the integration of operational activities which were clearly reflected in the improved quality of service and the focus on customers as we had a customer-centric operating model that was designed to ensure that we satisfy the growing needs of our different customers.

In the new integrated operating model we established three business units for Consumer, Corporate and Wholesale customers offering mobile, fixed and Internet services. To our shareholders, this meant that the company is not only maintaining and growing its existing business customer base but also exploring new revenue streams through the resale of our network services, benefitting from owning the largest telecom network with the widest coverage in the sultanate.

"The launch of the integrated operational model played an important role in introducing innovative products and services for the first time in Oman, such as Mada Infinity and Mada Liberty, Hayyak Liberty and unlimited home broadband packages, Dr Rawas added.
