UAE: On-the-spot jabs for travellers at Dnata offices

DUBAI - The Dubai Health Authority and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) have collaborated to provide a facility for travellers to purchase vaccinations and get vaccinated on-the-spot at Dnata offices on Shaikh Zayed road.

The DHA has set up a consultation office and a vaccination room at the Dnata offices for the comfort and ease of travellers. Dr Ahmed Kalban, CEO of Primary Health Care at the DHA said: "We have tied up with GSK to provide travellers with on-the-spot consultation and vaccination services to protect them from diseases which they may contract while they are abroad.

The importance of vaccinations cannot be underestimated and therefore we aim to use this programme as a platform to educate travellers about this service." The aim of this campaign is to educate all travellers about the importance of vaccinations.

"With the Haj pilgrimage underway and with the Christmas season coming up, there will be a significant number of people who travel abroad to different locations and it is our aim to ensure we educate them and protect them from developing any diseases while on holiday," said Dr Fatma Al Attar, Head of Preventive services, Primary Health Care at the DHA.

Attar said that DHA physicians will be present at the Dnata offices to provide consultation and on-the-spot vaccination services. She said, "We will assess the health risks and hazards based on the destination of travel and accordingly advice travellers to get certain vaccinations before they travel. We will also provide advice on safety measures."

Travellers to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia would need to take the meningitis vaccination and those travelling to the continent of Africa are advised to take a yellow fever vaccine. Other important vaccinations based on the destination of travel include vaccinates against Hepatitis A, B, polio vaccines, cholera and seasonal influenza vaccines.

For travellers who have asthma, Attar said: "It is important for them to carry a nebuliser and their medications with them and to consult their physician before travelling as there is a risk of asthma exacerbation during Haj."

She also advised that men who wish to shave their head after completion of the Hajj pilgrimage should do so from government regulated barbers so as to avoid reuse of razors and the risk of Hepatitis B and C.
