Global warming: Tunisia calls for more decisive role of industrialised countries

TUNIS - Tunisia called upon industrialised countries to play a key role in the achievement of the goals of the Climate Change Conference, to be held in Durban, South Africa, on November 28-December 9, 2011.

The Tunisian delegation attending the international seminar on "Addressing Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought in the Context of Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication," organised in New York September 20-24, 2011 on the fringes of the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly, also underlined the need to endow developing countries with technologies and appropriate technical and financial assistance to face up this phenomenon.

During the talk with Mrs. Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action, Secretary of State in charge of Environment Salem Hamdi underlined that Tunisia is concerned about environmental issues in the world, pointing out that these problems had contributed to the regression of the socio-economic situation, notably in inland regions of the country, one of the reasons of the start of the Tunisian Revolution.

"Global warming and desertification impacted negatively on the agricultural sector, caused the rise of prices of raw materials and favoured the increase of the phenomenon of inland and illegal immigration " he further pointed out.
