Beirut, 2 September 2011 (UN Information Services)-- Lebanese and Palestinian Ministers of Social Affairs Wael Abou Faour and Majida El Masri, respectively, and ESCWA Deputy Executive Secretary Nadim Khoury will open a workshop organized by the Commission on "Social Protection as Development," on Tuesday 6 September, at 9:00 AM, at the UN House in Beirut.Following the opening, Jordanian Minister of Labor Mahmoud Kafawin and ESCWA Regional Advisor on Social Policies Maha Yehya will both moderate a discussion session on "Strategies for Protection and Social Development."
In light of crises sweeping the Arab region and associated demands for comprehensive social justice, this workshop will bring together experts and professionals to discuss challenges, successes and failures of different forms of social protection applied in regional countries of ESCWA, Latin America as well as Asia and the Pacific. It aims at identifying innovative approaches for integrated social policy that combines social assistance, social security and economic empowerment, and that enhances the impact of protection programs and projects. Two separate sessions will also look into strategies for protection and social development in Palestine and ways of developing them.
