SEHA Works with Cerner to Simplify Care for Expectant Mothers
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates -- July 10, 2011 -- Continuing to build on their commitment to transform health care in Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC ( SEHA ) and Cerner announced today that six acute care hospitals in the SEHA system are the first facilities in the Middle East to digitize care processes for expectant mothers using Cerner's women's health maternity solution. This investment in women's health care technology is part of the expanded agreement between SEHA and Cerner announced last year.
"The solution is called PowerChart Maternity™. Our SEHA IT team, led by Sarah Thomson, clinical applications specialist, George Yacoub, chief information officer at Corniche, and Donna McCormick, ENT manager at SEHA home office, worked closely with the physicians and nurses at all six of the SEHA hospitals impacted to make the implementation a success. It rolled it out last week and already, employees are telling us they see the benefits accruing for our patients," said Robert Pickton, chief information officer for SEHA . "The module allows SEHA caregivers to monitor and integrate information on both the baby and mother and all the changes pregnancy brings to a mother from her first outpatient visit right up to delivery. It integrates the information stream of mother and baby to deliver better outcomes for both. We see this as a great health management tool going forward and are pleased to be participating."
The Cerner® maternity solution works within SEHA 's system-wide Cerner Millennium® electronic health record (EHR) architecture and improves care for mothers and babies by:
- Improving access to information: Doctors and nurses in the SEHA facilities have on-demand, real-time access to information about both the expectant mother and the baby throughout the pregnancy and during delivery, including notes from previous visits, lab results, radiology images and medications.
- Simplifying the care process: Information sharing is enabled between the mother's EHR and the baby's EHR after delivery, simplifying the care process and providing an important step in increasing the quality of care for both individuals. Knowledge-based alerts warn physicians of potentially dangerous situations, and electronic order entry eliminates transcription errors and illegible handwritten orders.
" SEHA is the first Cerner client in the Middle East to automate women's health functions in their facilities, and this will be one of the most extensive client deployments of this technology worldwide. This automation enables physicians and nurses to access and integrate details of women's pregnancy development and delivery across all SEHA facilities," said Greg White, vice president and managing director, Cerner Middle East, Africa and India. "This partnership reveals SEHA and Cerner's mutual vision to continue delivering a better care environment for mothers and newborns."
The six hospitals in the SEHA system implementing the new solution are Al Corniche Hospital and Sheikh Khalifa Medical City on the main island, Al Ain Hospital and Tawam Hospital in Al Ain, Mafraq Hospital in Mafraq and Al Rahba Hospital in Al Rahba. In recognition of SEHA 's commitment to improving care for mothers and babies, Cerner is donating 100 new car seats to SEHA for use by families of newborns.
