DOHA: A significant milestone was reached on June 21, 2011 when the LNG tanker "Al Ghuwairiya" (pictured) berthed at Ras Laffan to load her LNG cargo bound for Canaport, Canada. It is the 5,000th vessel to load at Ras Laffan Port. The Qatargas chartered vessel is one of the new generation Q-Max LNG tanker able to load a full LNG cargo of 260,000 cubic metres. The vessel is owned by the Qatar Gas Transport Company ( Nakilat ). LNG is produced by the two major Qatar Petroleum ( QP ) joint venture industries, Qatargas and RasGas, both based in Ras Laffan Industrial City ( RLC ) which is managed and administered by QP .
To mark the occasion, a special ceremony was held in RLC management offices with senior invitees from Qatargas , RasGas, Nakilat and Qatar Petroleum . RLC Director, Abdulaziz Al Muftah presented a commemorative plaque to the "Al Ghuwairiya" ship master Captain Derick Gomes.
Qatargas first cargo bound for Japan sailed from Ras Laffan Port on December 23, 1996 on the LNG tanker "Al Zubarah". Since then, the company has steadily increased its production and customer base and is now the world's largest LNG producer at 42 million tonnes per annum.
Nakilat -owned vessels representing 16 percent of the global LNG tonnage is the largest LNG fleet in the world. It consists of a total of 54 vessels of various sizes including Q-Flex and Q-Max sizes which were specially constructed to ship Qatar's LNG to the world markets.
With RLC providing the common facilities of land, infrastructure, port and cooling water, the companies based in Ras Laffan are in a strong position of growth and prosperity.
The Port is one of the top exporting ports in the Middle-East and Asia regions. Since operations commenced in September 1996, the port and its berth facilities have been increased significantly to cater for the exports of new and expanded industries.
With six operational LNG berths, the port is the world's premier LNG exporting facility and the only gateway for Qatar's LNG. On February 24, 2011 and for the first time, all the six LNG berths were occupied with tanker vessels loading LNG cargoes for various destinations of the globe.
