RAK residents seek bus service to remote areas
By Ismail Sebugwaawo RAS AL KHAIMAH -- Transport continues to be one of the major problems facing people residing in the remote areas of Ras Al Khaimah. Taxi service remains the only means of public transport for these internal destinations. The RAK Transport Authority (RAK TA) has several times promised to introduce internal bus services in the emirate to solve the problem especially for the low income earners and for those living in remote areas of the emirate.
But nothing has happened so far and the authorities have been postponing the launch of the service citing various reasons.
The price of the delay is being paid by the people living in these areas.
Ahmed Hassan, a resident of Al Naiyah said that most of the time they have to wait for a taxi that drops someone off from town.
Hassan noted that they have complained several times to the authorities about their transport woes but nothing has changed.
Hamdan Khalid who stays in Gubbu, near the Rocky Mountains, said that he does not own a vehicle and faces problems travelling from his place to towns and other areas.
"It is difficult to get a taxi here. Being a remote area with few commuters, taxi drivers are reluctant to come to our place. This makes it hard for poor people like me who do not own a vehicle," he added.
Emirati, Yusuf Abdul Nassir, a resident of Sha'am said there is urgent need for internal bus services in the emirate as poor and old people face difficulties in travelling to major towns in the emirate.
"Sometimes you can find old and weak men and women waiting for a long time for taxis. This situation is very difficult. Some workers sometimes decide to walk for long distances looking for a taxi or to cut the distance. Transport authorities should device some means to save poor people," added Abdul Nassir.
Residents have urged the authorities to help them introduce internal bus services as soon as possible in order to end the transport woes.
The Director of the Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority, Yusuf Mohamed Ismail has however said that they are aware of the transport problems being faced by the people especially those in remote areas.
He said that the programme for introducing internal bus services in the emirate is in its final stages and that very soon public buses will be on the roads to help transport people.
