Omantel to manage more undersea cables

Omantel said that it is strengthening its position as the 'carrier of carriers' for submarine cables landing in Oman and connecting to the rest of the region with the announcement that three new submarine cables will become operational by the end of this year.

The company already has international partnerships that have enabled Omantel to provide landing facilities for five international cable systems at sites in Bustan, Seeb, Blue City and on the Musandam peninsula.

Two more systems - the MENA and GBI networks - will land at the existing facility in Seeb and become operational from the last quarter of the year. Another system - the Pishgaman Oman Iran network (POI) - will become operational from a landing site at Blue City, near Suwaidi, before the end of 2011.

It is a mix of Omantel 's technological expertise allied to Oman's ideal geographic location that make the sultanate a major regional hub for submarine landing cables that connect the Gulf region to the world.

A company press release said that as demand for data continues to grow it anticipates that a number of other cables will be looking to use Oman as a landing site in the future, working closely with Omantel to ensure their effective implementation.

There are now five major international submarine cable systems already landing in Oman and is part of systems totalling over 100,000km of cable connecting nations around the world from the US to Australia. The submarine cable business and landing stations are managed by Omantel 's wholesale business unit.

Abdulrahim al Bahlani, GM of wholesale business relations, said, "The rapid growth in our submarine cable business reflects the growing demand of the region for high quality cable networks that can guarantee high speed data transmission of the very highest quality.

" Omantel is proud to have built a reputation in the region as a 'carrier of carriers' - using our expertise to ensure that Oman has become a gateway to the whole region for world class and efficient telecommunications and data transfer," Bahlani added.
