BUiD Celebrates Female Post-graduates as proud UAE ambassadors to Scotland

Sunday, 29th May 2011: As this is the week of The British University in Dubai's largest Graduation Ceremony to date, the University has also taken the opportunity to thank its 26 female students and alumnae who have elected to visit Dundee as the guests of the Al Maktoum Institute in Scotland over the last five years. On Sunday 29th May the ladies were invited to a small celebratory event with His Excellency Mirza Al Sayegh, Chairman, Al Maktoum Institute and Director for HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum's office .A celebratory video message was also received from Professor Nye, Principal of Al Maktoum Institute, Dundee, Scotland. The summer party departs for Dundee on 23rd of June 2011.

Under the generous patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance of the United Arab Emirates, female emirati students have gained a unique insight into a different but welcoming culture. The Academic Training Programme runs as a Summer and a Winter school, each of 2-4 weeks duration and was initiated in 2003 with students only from Zayed University. Today, students from all three federal institutions and from leading local universities such as BUiD, as well as from Qatar travel together in the spirit of collegiality befitting Dubai's successful mixed economy for higher education and the Emirate's commitment to collaboration throughout the Gulf.

His Excellency Mirza Al Sayegh in his address congratulated the students for taking active part in Al Maktoum Institute's training and its completion. He also said "This training not only provides UAE women with an opportunity to hone their leadership skills but also to establish an ongoing dialogue with senior dignitaries in Scotland to develop an understanding of cultures and tradition, and explore possibilities for future economic and social links with Scotland".

To date, BUiD has only offered post-graduate education and as a consequence the female students from the University have often exercised a mature, sisterly influence on their companions as well as representing the Emirate and Nation proudly in their meetings with many local dignitaries in and around Dundee. Visits have included the Scottish Parliament, university campuses as well as more traditional tourist sites in Edinburgh, Oxford, London and Newbury races. The winter visit and the students' encounters with the weather are now almost legendary, and you are not advised to challenge the ladies to a snowball fight!

At the same time, there is a serious and interesting educational agenda embracing dialogue and discourse on multi-culturalism, as well as other key 21st century leadership themes, and experience of other disciplines such as art & design education, and of course languages.

In Dundee, the Al Maktoum Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies is a beacon for higher learning in all associated areas; its programmes are validated by the University of Dundee and it aspires to University College status with its own degree-awarding powers as part of its forward strategic plan.

Prof Malory is always the perfect host for the visitors from the UAE, and together with HE Mirza Al Sayegh, Council Member of the British University in Dubai, is pivotal in the success of the program. From June 1st the Institute has the new status and title of Al Maktoum College of Higher Education.

Professor Abdullah Al Shamsi, Vice Chancellor and Martin Prince Registrar of BUiD said "We are pleased and proud that our female students are held in such high regard as responsible members of this programme. Our aim is to further the higher learning and advanced education of today's and tomorrow's leaders, for whom an international empathy and cross-cultural sensibility is essential. We know that our students demonstrate both academic and emotional intelligence of a high order. Therefore, we are delighted to celebrate the programme with our students, friends and supporters"

Amna Obaidali, BUiD's Ed D student who has signed up for Summer Training course of July 2011 commented "It is an honour to be part of Al Maktoum Institute's leadership initiative. It is a positive step towards empowerment of UAE females' .It provides an ideal opportunity to exhibit the capabilities of Emirati women and an excellent platform for exchange of knowledge and cultural understanding. I believe it will be a very rewarding experience for me and my colleagues from other universities."

Over one hundred Emirati female trainees of Al Maktoum Institute's of both Summer and Winter Schools will get the opportunity to meet H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance in person and thank him for this remarkable initiative; in the month of March 2012.
