Heat Stress Campaign Launched By Qatargas & RLIC
Doha - Qatar - Qatargas and Ras Laffan Industrial City ( RLIC ) Directorate launched a month-long awareness campaign at RLIC last week to educate thousands of contractors, employees and visitors, who go through the gates every day, on the dangers of heat stress and to keep hydrated. The campaign, which carries the slogan "Don't get dehydrated; Drink at least 8 cups of water everyday," urges employees, contractors and visitors to RLIC , especially those who are exposed to direct sunlight, to take appropriate precautionary measures to avoid getting dehydrated. It is also hopeful this message will be driven home outside of working hours.
Commenting on the company's support to the campaign, Dr. Osama Ibrahim, Chief Medical Officer, Qatargas Medical Department, said:
He added:
Leon Van Der Heyde, Manager HSE at Ras Laffan Industrial City said:
"This campaign which is done annually has proven to be very successful in reducing the risk of heat stress related illnesses associated with the summer season. RLC has the privilege to enjoy the support from companies like Qatargas in supporting various HSE awareness campaigns aiming for the safety and well-being of the overall workforce in Ras Laffan Industrial City ."
During the campaign, printed literature in multiple languages listing safe practices for preventing heat stress will be handed over to those coming through the gates in Ras Laffan; in addition, banners and billboards will be erected along the streets of RLIC reminding all to drink water - at least eight cups a day.
RLIC
is home to some 60,000 people belonging to different companies including major government owned energy companies, international firms and contractors; many of them work under direct sunlight thereby exposing themselves to heat stress, unless appropriate safety precautions are taken. The Heat Stress Campaign encourages everyone to take such precautions as wearing appropriate clothing, drinking plenty of water, eating regular meals, taking frequent breaks in cool, shaded areas, following the heat stress guidelines, scheduling heavy work during the coolest part of the day and following the heat stress flagging system.
