Sharjah may unify school services fee
By Mohsen Rashid The Sharjah Education Zone is pondering over unifying the service fee collected by private schools in Sharjah, be it Arabic or foreign curricula, by the next academic year. The services fee includes fee for school buses and labs and the price of textbooks. This was announced during a meeting held recently by the Director of Sharjah Education Zone (SEZ) Saeed Al Katbi for principals of private schools in Sharjah.
Al Katbi said that he is not convinced of the services fee collected by private schools, the school bus fee for instance.
Elaborating, he said in areas where there are a large number of private schools, one school collects Dh2,000 as bus fee, while another next door collects Dh7,000.
However, there is a great variance in the fee collected even if the services provided are the same, said Al Katbi. The variance can also be seen in the price of textbooks and lab fee he said and added that it should be unified across all schools.
Some schools justify the high cost on the grounds that the bus and its passengers, the students, are insured leading to almost double the cost, he said. Likewise, Al Katbi said, certain schools add the stationery cost to the cost of textbooks resulting in a seemingly higher cost there.
Al Katbi said that he has ordered the managements of all private schools to turn in a detailed report about the fixed services they provide to the SEZ. The report should state the fee for each service and the reasons for hiking the fee.
Each case will be studied separately to ascertain the eligibility of each school to hike the fee.
Captain Khalid Al Sharqi from the Sharjah Traffic Department said full insurance on school buses that covers passengers does not allow schools to levy an increase in the transport fee since private schools are obliged to get the students insured. Therefore it is not a service or a good turn that schools do to parents, he added.
