Arab League backs Palestinian state move

DOHA: The Arab League yesterday backed seeking UN recognition for a Palestinian state, after Qatar proposed that the Middle East peace process be resumed only when Israel is ready for further negotiations.

In a statement at a meeting of the Arab Peace Initiative Committee here, the League said it "supports the appeal to the UN asking that Palestine, within the 1967 borders, becomes a full-fledged state."

Earlier, opening the meeting, the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, H E Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani, said: "It is better for us to cease the peace process until the partner is ready for it."

The Prime Minister stressed the need to examine the peace process and formulate a clear stance, saying Israel did not want the talks to reach any conclusion.

The meeting chaired by Qatar was held to examine developments concerning the Palestinian issue following US President Barack Obama's policy speech on the Middle East on May 19.

The Prime Minister said the refusal by the United States to put pressure on Israel to respond to peace initiatives had led Israel to avoid negotiations.

"We have accepted many times requests from the United States as a sponsor of the peace process, and welcomed many times the Palestinian National Authority's decision to enter into negotiations with Israel. But the US reluctance, withdrawal and rejection of pressurising Israel to respond to the positions and initiatives make Israel to completely deny all these efforts," the Prime Minister said.

He said this showed Israel's intentions were against peace.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expressed his determination to head to the United Nations in September to seek recognition for a Palestinian state.

"Our option is still negotiation, but it seems that because of conditions imposed by (Israeli Premier Benjamin) Netanyahu... we have no choice but to use the UN to get recognition of our state," he said yesterday.
