Sadrists call on AL to expand relations with Iraq

The Political Authority of the Sadrist Trend called today on the Arab League and its new Secretary General to be open to the peoples and expand its diplomatic relations with Iraq.

In a statement, a copy of which was received by Aswat al-Iraq, the Trend welcomed the election of Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabeel Al-Arabi as new secretary general.

The statement called to implement the principles and goals of the Arab League , because "it is the pavilion to discuss and solve all Arab issues and to work towards uniting the Arab ranks."

The trend called on the Arab League to support the people.

"Diplomatic relations with Iraq should be enhanced, particularly following the U.S. withdrawal at the end of this year, when Iraq will have its full sovereignty," the statement added.

Arab Foreign Ministers met on 15 May, 2011 and agreed that the Egyptian nominee shall be the new secretary general, provided that he will assume his post after two months, pending the appointment of a new Egyptian foreign minister.
